Do you need a guide at the Colosseum?

The Colosseum explains itself from the outside and says almost nothing from the inside. The Forum says nothing at all: it is a field of columns, stumps and brick cores, and without someone to tell you which is which, an hour there is an hour of walking.

What you get with no guide at all

Less than you expect. The Forum has small plaques that give a name and a date; the Colosseum has panels, and the crowd stands in front of them. You will recognise the famous things — the arena, the Arch of Titus — and you will not learn what connected them, which is the whole point of this particular place.

A live guide

At its best this is the best option there is, and you cannot tell in advance whether you are getting it at its best. You are buying a person: a good one reads the group and answers the question you actually have, a tired one recites. You also buy a fixed departure time and the group’s pace, which is the real cost — nobody stops where you wanted to stop.

One practical argument outweighs the rest: if you want to walk the underground, an accompanied visit is usually the only way in. There the tour is doing two jobs at once, and the price covers both.

The rented guide at the gate

The park rents a handheld guide at the Colosseum for a few euros. It is tied to the building you rented it in, it goes back at the exit, and it does not follow you across to the Forum. There is a counter, a queue at the counter, and a deposit. For the Colosseum alone, on a day when you brought no phone worth the name, it is a reasonable purchase.

An app on your own phone

Your own headphones, your own pace, no queue and no deposit. The stories stay on the phone afterwards, and the whole family can listen in different languages from their own devices. Downloaded in advance, it works with the phone in airplane mode, which also settles the roaming question for visitors from outside the EU.

The honest downside is the screen. An app is a thing you look at, and the Forum deserves better than being seen through a phone. The fix is simple and worth saying out loud: start the story, put the phone in your pocket, look at the ruin.

Nothing, and read about it afterwards

A perfectly defensible plan for a short visit, and the one that suffers most at the Forum specifically. The Colosseum survives being seen without explanation — it is a huge, legible object. The Forum without explanation is a rubble field with a very good view.

How to choose

• you want the underground: an accompanied visit, and everything else follows from that booking
• you like asking questions and having the day organised for you: a live guide, booked from the park or a reputable operator
• you are travelling with children: short bursts and frequent stops, which an app does better than a group that cannot wait for you
• you are visiting all three areas in one day: something that crosses between them, because the rented guide does not
• you have two hours and a strong interest: an app, and spend the saving on coming back
